In the 2009 film "The Hole" the mise-en-scene used is lighting. An example of this is used in the bathroom scene where the lighting goes from high-key to low-key. At 0.53, as the lady crouches on the floor to look under the toilet door, the lighting is completely cut out. This gives the effect of danger as the character can not see which gives a feeling of great fear. Although we already know something bad is going to happen, it also gives the audience a sense of apprehension that we can not see the face of the little girl who came out of the bathroom cubicle.
In my opinion, lighting took a big part in making the film scary as we would be able to see everything that's going on, ie.the unknown and the scene would not be as tense if high key lighting was used throughout this particular scene. The idea of darkness or being blind gives everyone that fear of not being able to see and not knowing what your surroundings are and the dangers that may be approaching which can lead you to an overactive imagination, just by not seeing the little girl's face changes the mood as we know something is not right. We know that where high key lighting is used, it is a happy positive atmosphere, for example,in the first minute the mood is happy up until we see under the cubicle door.
Another technique used was camera work. An example of this is throughout the whole scene where things such as panning, tilting and close up shots were used. These camera techniques were used to create effect and give the audience a scared feeling as well as making them feel as if they the lady. The camera slowly zooms in towards the cubicle with the closed door, giving the audience the impression that there IS someone or something in there. The camera is shown from the girl's point of view, this creates tension because,we as the audience don't know what the little girl looks like and yet we "are the girl", we also see the little girl from the lady's perspective which also creates fear as we can see the little girl and we know she's there but we can't see her face.
As the end of the scene approaches the camera slowly zooms on the lady's face creating a close up shot;this shows us the scared yet calm expression on the lady's face. In my opinion I think that camera work took a huge part in this scene, I think this because, without any of the camera techniques the scene would still be scary but wouldn't put as much fear into the audience whereas, when the techniques such as panning and close up shots are used it makes the scene more effective and makes the audience terrorised.
Another element used was makeup. The makeup used gave the audience the idea of the character's personality for example, the little girls makeup was very pale and had dark makeup around her eyes. This effect makes us as the audience think the little girl is ill or that there is something wrong with her,the pink dress she wears suggests that she is a young girl. Her costume is very dirty, which could suggest that she is a very messy person or that she came from a neglected home.
